Long before Frank set foot on an actual sailing vessal he knew Port from Starboard and Sheet from Halyard from reading about these things in history books and from building exceedingly accurate ship models. Later Frank began volunteering at the South Street Seaport Museum, working and sailing on real century old schooners and the three masted tall ship Wavertree.
Frank owns a marlingspike and knows how to use it, he can tie any knot or splice three stranded line to perfection. But Frank stops short of calling himself a real sailor and often describes himself as a very salty Landlubber, in recognition that he is at best a hobbyist who, though passionate about his subject, is not ready to take command of a ship and set sail for Cape Horn. Even though he can recommend any number of books about doing just that.
